Nick Orsborn

Nick Orsborn has lived and worked in Brighton as an Artist/Designer for over 40 years. He divides his time between Painting – mainly in Watercolour, and the designing and making of cast resin Jewellery.

In 2007 he was elected to the membership of The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), and he exhibits paintings each year at the RI Annual Exhibition at The Mall Galleries, London.

Nick also produces a wide range of limited edition giclée Prints of his work. Many of these can be viewed (and purchased) on his website.

Nick’s resin jewellery is marketed under the name Cicada Jewellery. Cicada Jewellery was founded by Nick Orsborn and Pat Thornton in 1973 . For 10 years (1975-85) the jewellery was retailed from their shop/gallery in the North Laine area of Brighton and wholesaled throughout the world. UK buyers included Biba, Liberty and The Body Shop, and commissioned work in resin was undertaken for Zandra Rhodes and the BBC. In 1980 the Crafts Council of Great Britain showcased Cicada Jewellery at the ICA Galleries. The V & A Museum, Brighton Museum and Hove Museum all have examples of Cicada Jewellery in their collections.

For most of the nineties and into the first few years of this century hardly any Cicada Jewellery was produced, but this all changed in 2003 when Nick relaunched the range, and production has continued ever since – although on a different scale compared to the early years. Nick makes every piece of jewellery himself in his Brighton studio/workshop. He has no desire to return to wholesale or to expand into mass production. Cicada Jewellery will only ever be available in strictly limited quantities and sold, not in shops but at exhibitions and Artists Open Houses. In addition, some Cicada designs can be bought online through his website.
